Great Michael Bay action movie ruined by simp ending
The king of kinetic 90s action cinema returns with a high octane thrill ride full of delightful car crashes, shootouts and ever increasing stakes.
What makes this movie more fun than many of Bay's previous outings is the smaller, more character focused scale. No one's trying to hold a country hostage, no one's trying to save the world. The story is character driven, not plot driven, which is a rarity in today's cinematic age where most films are just a series of things happening.
The acting is spectacular across the board, the tension is near constant. Yes, some of the usual Michael Bay tropes are here like some shaky cam, cliché control room scenes, too many side characters trying to act street or gangsta.. but most of it is toned down enought to not be too distracting, and the action scenes have such good pacing, wish shaky cam scenes worked into shot transition, that it's hardly a detriment. The editing here is spot on, though the movie could have used a shorter run time. The material is stretched thin at points.
What nearly ruins the movie though is the tacky, simp ending. Everything happens exactly as you predict it will happen. There's no clever twist, no thematic exploration, just the most unimaginative sappy simp ending possible. Oh well.
This never reaches the comedic or dramatic heights of Pain and Gain, but it's still by far one of Michael Bay's best films.
